Delft, April 7, 2023 – On Saturday, April 1st, the annual Dentist Day was organized in Delft. Together with various aid agencies, vulnerable residents of Delft could receive completely free treatment from the dentists and dental hygienists of De Delftse Tandartspraktijk. An opportunity for more than 30 Delft residents to visit the dentist, which is normally not possible due to limited financial resources.
The second edition of Dentist Day in Delft was just as big a success as the previous edition in 2022. "By working together with various aid agencies, we know that the people we received during this day really benefit from treatment," says Merve Can, a dentist at De Delftse Tandartspraktijk. Throughout the day, eligible individuals could have their teeth cleaned, cavities filled, teeth extracted, and other minor procedures performed. Many visitors indicated in the post-event survey that they find a visit to the dentist very important and that this day makes a big difference for them. The contact with the dentists and/or dental hygienists was rated a 10 by nearly everyone.
A visit to the dentist is a matter of course for many people. However, this is certainly not the case for many Dutch people. The fear of the dentist and lack of financial means are decisive factors for many people to stop visiting the dentist. "Since I became ill, I don't have much money to spare. I used to go to the dentist regularly, but I can't afford it financially anymore," said one of the patients during Dentist Day. De Delftse Tandartspraktijk organized this day to draw attention to the fact that many people cannot access dental care due to limited financial resources. This can lead to social isolation and psychological problems due to ongoing pain. Structural solutions for this target group must stop this growing problem. This day is therefore organized nationally in multiple cities to raise awareness for this issue.
